G. Madhavan Nair is a highly distinguished Indian space scientist and technologist who served as the 6th Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Secretary to the Department of Space from 2003 to 2009. Born in Kulasekharam in the former Travancore State, he graduated in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University of Kerala before completing rigorous specialized training at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). Over an eminent career spanning more than forty years, Nair established himself as a preeminent pioneer of indigenous rocket systems and launch vehicle technologies. As Project Director, he successfully spearheaded the development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which evolved into the reliable workhorse of India's satellite launching capabilities. His administrative tenure at the helm of ISRO was historically significant, presiding over 25 successful space missions, most notably masterminding India's maiden lunar probe, Chandrayaan-1, which discovered water molecules on the Moon. He also pioneered societal satellite applications including extensive rural tele-education, village resource networks, and telemedicine initiatives. For his extraordinary contributions to aerospace engineering and scientific self-reliance, he was honored with India's highest civilian distinctions, including the Padma Bhushan in 1998 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2009.
