Western Railways is one of the premier and busiest operational zones of Indian Railways, the state-owned national railway system of India. Headquartered at the historic Churchgate station in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Western Railways serves as a vital economic lifeline for the nation. The zone encompasses a vast geographical jurisdiction, completely covering the state of Gujarat while extending across coastal Maharashtra, western parts of Madhya Pradesh, and strategic segments of Rajasthan. For administrative and operational efficiency, the network is divided into six major divisions: Mumbai WR, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Ratlam, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar.

Established in the mid-twentieth century through a comprehensive integration of regional networks, the zone has grown to manage an incredibly dense mix of industrial freight and passenger traffic. A major hallmark of its operations is the Western Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, an expansive rapid transit network that transports millions of commuters daily. The zone operates key trunk lines, including the high-revenue Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad and Mumbai Central–Ratlam routes, connecting the financial capital to New Delhi and other northern regions. Furthermore, Western Railways offers critical logistical support to India's maritime economy by providing comprehensive port connectivity to major maritime hubs like Kandla, Mundra, and Pipavav. Over the decades, it has pioneered several technological advancements in Indian rail transit, including the introduction of early electric suburban services and modern air-conditioned local trains, solidifying its role as a cornerstone of public transit and commercial logistics in western India.
