The Government of Gujarat, colloquially known as the Gujarat Government, is the supreme governing authority for the Indian state of Gujarat and its 33 constituent districts. Established on May 1, 1960, following the bifurcation of the bilingual Bombay State under the Bombay Reorganisation Act, the government operates within the constitutional framework of India as a state-level executive, legislative, and judicial structure. The state's administrative capital was initially located in Ahmedabad before being officially transferred to the purpose-built city of Gandhinagar in 1970. The structure of the Government of Gujarat consists of three main branches: the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary. The Governor of Gujarat serves as the ceremonial de jure head of state, appointed by the President of India. However, real executive authority rests with the Chief Minister, who leads the Council of Ministers and is responsible to the unicameral Gujarat Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha). The legislative assembly comprises 182 directly elected members serving five-year terms. The judiciary is headed by the Gujarat High Court, located in Ahmedabad, which holds jurisdiction over state-level legal matters. Since 1995, the political landscape of the government has been largely dominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
