About
James Harris Simons, known as Jim Simons, was an American mathematician, billionaire hedge fund manager, and philanthropist. Celebrated as the father of quantitative investing, Simons transformed Wall Street by pioneering the use of mathematical models and algorithmic trading strategies. He earned a doctorate in mathematics from UC Berkeley at age 23 and made landmark contributions to geometry and topology, most notably co-developing the Chern-Simons form, which later proved vital to theoretical physics and string theory. After serving as chair of the mathematics department at Stony Brook University and working as a codebreaker for the Institute for Defense Analyses, Simons transitioned to finance in 1978. In 1982, he founded Renaissance Technologies, an East Setauket-based quantitative hedge fund management firm. Under his leadership, Renaissance created the Medallion Fund, an exclusive fund renowned as one of the most profitable investment portfolios in financial history, generating average annual returns exceeding 60 percent before fees over three decades. Simons retired as chief executive officer in 2009 and as non-executive chairman in 2021. Alongside his wife Marilyn Simons, he established the Simons Foundation, donating billions to advanced scientific research, mathematics education, and autism research before his passing in 2024.
