About
Yogi Adityanath is an Indian Hindu monk and prominent political leader serving as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh since 2017. Born Ajay Singh Bisht in the scenic hills of Uttarakhand, he completed his bachelor's degree in Mathematics before transitioning into a spiritual and monastic lifestyle. In the early 1990s, he renounced his family life to become a dedicated disciple of Mahant Avaidyanath, the high priest of the historic Gorakhnath Math temple in Gorakhpur. Adityanath subsequently succeeded his guru as the Mahant of the influential monastery in 2014.
His foray into mainstream national politics began in 1998 when he won a seat in the Lok Sabha representing the Gorakhpur constituency. At just 26 years old, he earned the distinction of being the youngest member elected to the 12th Lok Sabha. He went on to represent the region for five consecutive terms as a member of Parliament, establishing a powerful grassroots influence and founding the youth cultural organization Hindu Yuva Vahini.
Following a landslide electoral victory by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2017 state assembly elections, Adityanath was chosen to head the government of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state. Known for his firm stance on law and order and an aggressive developmental push, he became the state's longest-serving chief minister from the BJP and secured a historic consecutive second term following another decisive assembly election victory in 2022.
