Anandiben Mafatbhai Patel is a distinguished Indian politician and former educator currently serving as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Born on November 21, 1941, in Kharod village, Gujarat, she began her career as a school teacher and later became the principal of Mohiniba Kanya Vidyalaya in Ahmedabad. Her entry into public life was catalyzed by her heroic rescue of two drowning schoolgirls from the Sardar Sarovar reservoir in 1987, an act of bravery that earned her the President's Gallantry Award and drew the attention of the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership. She joined the BJP later that year, rising quickly to become the President of the state's women's wing. Patel served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 1998 before entering state politics. As a powerful state legislator, she held crucial cabinet portfolios in the Government of Gujarat, including Education, Revenue, and Roads and Buildings. In May 2014, she made history by becoming the first female Chief Minister of Gujarat, succeeding Narendra Modi after his election as Prime Minister of India. During her tenure as Chief Minister, she prioritized school enrollment, female literacy, and land revenue reforms. She resigned from the post in August 2016. Transitioning to constitutional roles, she served as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh before being appointed as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh in July 2019, where she remains an active and widely respected administrator.
