Prakash Ramesh Padukone is a legendary Indian former professional badminton player widely considered the pioneer of modern badminton in India. Born in Bengaluru, Karnataka, he was introduced to the sport by his father, Ramesh Padukone, who was a long-time secretary of the Mysore Badminton Association. Padukone dominated the domestic circuit for nearly a decade, achieving a historic streak of nine consecutive Senior National Championship titles from 1971 to 1979, beginning his streak at the record-breaking age of 16.

His international breakthrough came in 1978 when he captured the men's singles gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada. Padukone achieved global sporting immortality in 1980 by claiming the Danish Open and Swedish Open before becoming the first Indian ever to win the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships, defeating Indonesia's iconic Liem Swie King. This historic triumph propelled him to the World No. 1 ranking, making him a national hero. He continued to compete at the highest level through the 1980s, securing a World Cup gold in 1981 and a bronze medal at the 1983 World Championships in Copenhagen.

Following his retirement from active competition, Padukone dedicated himself to sports governance, coaching, and talent development. In 1994, he co-founded the highly influential Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy (PPBA) in Bengaluru, which nurtured generation-defining champions like Pullela Gopichand and Lakshya Sen. In 2001, he co-founded Olympic Gold Quest, a non-profit foundation structured to support elite Indian athletes across diverse Olympic disciplines. He transitioned to focus heavily on grassroots development through the Padukone School of Badminton.
