Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman, popularly known as VVS Laxman, is a former Indian international cricketer and one of the most elegant batsmen to have ever played the game. Renowned for his exquisite wristwork, composure under pressure, and ability to play match-winning innings alongside tail-enders, Laxman was a mainstay of the Indian Test middle-order during the late 1990s and 2000s. He is best remembered for his monumental knock of 281 against Australia at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in 2001, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest Test innings in cricket history. This historic performance helped India win the match after being asked to follow on, ending Australia's 16-match winning streak. Over his distinguished career, Laxman played 134 Test matches, scoring 8,781 runs with 17 centuries, and 86 One Day Internationals. He formed a part of the legendary Fab Four of Indian batting alongside Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sourav Ganguly. In recognition of his immense contribution to Indian sports, he was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, in 2011. After retiring from active cricket in 2012, Laxman transitioned into coaching, mentoring, and broadcasting. He served as the mentor for the IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad for several years and was appointed as the Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru in late 2021, where he continues to shape the future of Indian cricket.
