He had been elected as a member of the upper house of parliament, Rajya Sabha, from Gujarat from 2017 to 2019. André Weil was one of the most influential mathematicians of the twentieth century, renowned for his foundational work in algebraic geometry and number theory. Born in Paris to an Alsatian Jewish family, he was the older brother of the famous philosopher Simone Weil. André studied at the École Normale Supérieure and received his doctorate in 1928, establishing early in his career a deep connection between number theory and algebraic curves. In 1934, Weil became a founding member and the intellectual leader of Nicolas Bourbaki, a pseudonym for a collaborative group of French mathematicians aimed at rebuilding mathematics from its foundational axioms. During the outbreak of World War II, Weil fled France to avoid military service but was arrested in Finland and deported back to France, where he was briefly imprisoned. While in prison, he formulated his influential Weil conjectures, which laid out a profound dictionary between topology and number theory. He eventually escaped to the United States, where he held academic positions, notably at the University of Chicago from 1947 to 1958, and later at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, from 1958 until his retirement. Weil's work bridged classical algebraic geometry and modern abstract geometry, profoundly influencing mathematicians like Alexander Grothendieck and Pierre Deligne, who eventually proved his conjectures. He was awarded the Wolf Prize in 1979 and the Kyoto Prize in 1994. Weil passed away in Princeton in 1998, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that redefined modern mathematics.
