Randhir made his debut as both a leading actor and director with the 1971 family drama film Kal Aaj Aur Kal, which also featured his father Raj Kapoor and grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor, marking a rare three-generation collaboration. Throughout the 1970s, Randhir became a popular leading man, starring in several successful movies such as Jeet, Hamrahi, Jawani Diwani, Lafange, and Ponga Pandit.
