Rajashree Birla is an eminent Indian philanthropist and the chairperson of the Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development, the CSR arm of the multinational conglomerate Aditya Birla Group. Born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, she grew up in a traditional Rajasthani family and completed her education at Madurai University. In 1965, she married Aditya Vikram Birla, a pioneering Indian industrialist. Following his untimely demise in 1995, Rajashree dedicated herself entirely to social causes, restructuring the group's community initiatives to create sustainable development models. Under her visionary leadership, the Aditya Birla Group's CSR initiatives span across thousands of villages in India, focusing on healthcare, education, sustainable livelihood, infrastructure, and social reform. She has been a passionate advocate for the eradication of polio, partnering closely with Rotary International and the World Health Organization. She serves on the boards of several major organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and the Asia Pacific Committee. In recognition of her exemplary humanitarian services and social work, the Government of India honored her with the Padma Bhushan, the nation's third-highest civilian award, in 2011. Today, she continues to inspire millions through her tireless commitment to elevating marginalized communities and promoting corporate social responsibility globally.
