Mrinalini Sarabhai was an acclaimed Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and instructor widely recognized for her pioneering contributions to Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. Born into the prominent Swaminadhan family, she received early education in Switzerland and studied under Rabindranath Tagore at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan before formalizing her classical dance training under esteemed gurus. In 1942, she married celebrated physicist Vikram Sarabhai, the father of the Indian space program. In 1948, Sarabhai established the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad, an institution that trained thousands of students in dance, drama, music, and puppetry. Throughout her long career, she choreographed over 300 dance dramas, utilizing traditional classical forms to address contemporary social themes such as environmental conservation, women's rights, and social justice. In addition to her performances across the globe, Sarabhai authored numerous books, children's stories, and plays, and served as chairperson of several cultural and developmental organizations. Her distinguished service to the arts earned her numerous honors, including the Padma Shri in 1965 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992.
