Born into a prominent cinematic family, she is the daughter of poet-lyricist Javed Akhtar and screenwriter Honey Irani. Zoya completed her studies in filmmaking at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts before starting her career as an assistant director for leading filmmakers like Mira Nair and Dev Benegal, as well as her brother Farhan Akhtar.
