Venugopal Rao is a former Indian international cricketer and politician who represented the Indian national cricket team in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Born on February 26, 1982, in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Rao was a talented right-handed middle-order batsman and a handy right-arm off-break bowler. He rose to prominence through consistent performances in domestic cricket for Andhra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, eventually earning his national call-up in 2005. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka at Dambulla and went on to play 16 ODIs for India, with a highest score of 61. Rao was a prominent figure in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from its inception, playing for franchises like the Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was a key member of the Deccan Chargers squad that won the tournament's second edition in South Africa in 2009. Over his illustrious domestic career, he amassed more than 7,000 first-class runs and over 4,000 List A runs, captaining the Andhra team successfully. In July 2019, Rao officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Following his retirement, he ventured into political life, formally joining the Jana Sena Party led by Pawan Kalyan in Andhra Pradesh, and also worked as a cricket commentator and analyst for Telugu sports broadcasts.
