Tanuja is a veteran Indian actress who predominantly worked in the Hindi and Bengali film industries. Born Tanuja Samarth on September 23, 1943, in Bombay, she belongs to a prominent film family. She is the daughter of actress Shobhna Samarth and producer Kumarsen Samarth, the sister of legendary actress Nutan, and the mother of Bollywood stars Kajol and Tanishaa Mukerji. Tanuja began her acting career as a child artist in the 1950 film Hamari Beti. She made her debut as a lead actress in the film Chhabili in 1960, which was directed by her mother. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Tanuja established herself as a versatile and spirited actress with her performances in classics such as Jewel Thief, Haathi Mere Saathi, and Anubhav. She also made significant contributions to Bengali cinema, starring in memorable films like Deya Neya alongside Uttam Kumar. Tanuja won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for Paisa Ya Pyar in 1969 and was honored with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
