Élie Cartan was an influential French mathematician who made fundamental and pioneering contributions to the theory of Lie groups, differential systems, mathematical physics, and differential geometry. Born in Dolomieu, France, Cartan showed mathematical talent early on and went on to study at the prestigious École Normale Supérieure in Paris. His doctoral thesis, completed in 1894, was a seminal work on the classification of simple Lie algebras over the complex numbers, completing the work started by Wilhelm Killing. Throughout his prolific career, Cartan introduced several groundbreaking mathematical concepts. He formulated the theory of exterior differential forms, which revolutionized differential geometry and mathematical physics. He also developed the theory of spinors, which later found profound applications in quantum mechanics, and pioneered the study of symmetric spaces. Cartan held academic positions at various institutions, including the universities of Montpellier, Geneva, and Lyon, before joining the University of Paris as a professor in 1912. He taught there until his retirement in 1940, mentoring a generation of elite mathematicians. Cartan's immense legacy is preserved through numerous concepts named after him, such as Cartan connections, Cartan's criteria, and the Cartan-Weyl theorem. He was also the father of another prominent mathematician, Henri Cartan, and physicist Louis Cartan. His work bridged the classical mathematics of the nineteenth century and the modern abstraction of the twentieth century, influencing both mathematics and theoretical physics.
