During the outbreak of World War II, Weil fled France to avoid military service but was arrested in Finland and deported back to France, where he was briefly imprisoned. While in prison, he formulated his influential Weil conjectures, which laid out a profound dictionary between topology and number theory. He eventually escaped to the United States, where he held academic positions, notably at the University of Chicago from 1947 to 1958, and later at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, from 1958 until his retirement. Weil's work bridged classical algebraic geometry and modern abstract geometry, profoundly influencing mathematicians like Alexander Grothendieck and Pierre Deligne, who eventually proved his conjectures.
