Pullela Gopichand is a former Indian badminton player who currently serves as the Chief National Coach for the Indian national badminton team. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Indian sports, credited with revolutionizing badminton in the country. Gopichand achieved international fame in 2001 when he won the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships, becoming only the second Indian to achieve this feat after Prakash Padukone. Following a distinguished playing career that was hampered by chronic knee injuries, Gopichand transitioned into coaching and founded the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad in 2008. His academy has served as the breeding ground for some of India's finest badminton players, including Olympic medalists Saina Nehwal and P. V. Sindhu, as well as former world number one Srikanth Kidambi. Under his rigorous training and mentorship, India emerged as a powerhouse in global badminton. In recognition of his immense contribution to the sport, both as a player and a mentor, the Government of India has honored Gopichand with several of its highest sporting and civilian accolades. These include the Arjuna Award in 1999, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2001, the Dronacharya Award for excellence in coaching in 2009, and the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, in 2014. He continues to shape the future of Indian badminton by scouting new talent and overseeing the development of elite athletes.
