Mark Boucher is a legendary former South African international cricketer and coach, widely regarded as one of the greatest wicket-keeper-batsmen in the history of the sport. Born on December 3, 1976, in East London, South Africa, Boucher made his international debut in 1997. Over a stellar fifteen-year career, he became the first wicket-keeper to reach 500 Test dismissals, eventually retiring with a world-record 998 international dismissals across all formats, including 555 in Test cricket. His aggressive batting style and resilience in the lower-middle order made him a crucial asset for the Proteas. In 2012, a tragic eye injury sustained from a flying bail during a warm-up match against Somerset forced his sudden retirement from playing international cricket. Following his playing career, Boucher successfully transitioned into cricket coaching. He served as the head coach of the domestic franchise Titans from 2016 to 2019, leading them to multiple championship titles. In December 2019, he was appointed head coach of the South African national men's cricket team, guiding them through a transitional phase until his departure in late 2022. Boucher then stepped into franchise cricket coaching, taking the role of head coach for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League starting in 2023. Beyond cricket, Boucher is highly passionate about wildlife preservation and is the founder of the SAB-Boucher Conservation Partnership, which focuses on rhinoceros conservation in South Africa.
