Mahesh Baliram Sawant is an Indian politician and member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly representing the historic Mahim constituency in Mumbai. Affiliated with the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction, Sawant rose to prominence after winning a high-stakes high-profile triangular contest in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. The son of a mill worker, Sawant positioned himself as a grassroots worker and a common man's representative deeply connected to local issues in Dadar and Mahim. In the 2024 elections, he secured the Mahim seat—long considered the traditional birthplace and fortress of the Shiv Sena—by defeating sitting MLA Sada Sarvankar of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Amit Thackeray of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. Sawant's narrow victory by over 1,300 votes reclaimed the iconic political epicenter of Dadar for the SS-UBT.
