Barack Obama is an American politician, author, and retired attorney who served as the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he made history as the first African American president. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Obama graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he served as the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review. Before his presidency, he worked as a community organizer, civil rights attorney, and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School. He served in the Illinois State Senate from 1997 to 2004 and represented Illinois in the United States Senate from 2005 to 2008. During his two terms in the White House, Obama signed historic legislation including the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In foreign policy, he ordered the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, signed the JCPOA nuclear deal with Iran, and normalized relations with Cuba. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009. Since leaving office, Obama has remained an influential public figure, writing bestselling memoirs and co-founding the Obama Foundation and Higher Ground Productions.
